The story of Compass Group began in 1941 in the UK when Jack Bateman set up staff canteens for British workers producing war materials during the Second World War. Bateman was keen to ensure that the workers received nutritious and good food during a demanding time. In 1967, Bateman Catering was acquired by Grand Metropolitan, and in 1984 the company Compass Services was born. Ten years later, Metropolitan was sold off and Compass Group was established as a separate company. In 1995, Compass Group was listed on the London Stock Exchange

The company established itself in the Norwegian market in the 1990s through the acquisition of companies such as SAS Service Partner, CD Catering, Stavanger Catering and Norske Chalk. In 2002, Compass Group strengthened its position in the Norwegian canteen market by acquiring Manpower Kantineservice, which was merged with Eurest. At the same time, the land-based meal service and facility management business was brought together under the name Eurest Personalrestauranter. The company now consisted of three central businesses: ESS Support Services for offshore catering, Eurest AS for canteen operations, and Medirest Norge AS for patient hotels and rehabilitation.

In January 2013, these businesses were brought together under a single management team, and in 2019, Compass Group further strengthened its Nordic presence through the acquisition of Fazer Food Services.

04.11.2020 Eurest AS changed its name to Compass Group AS, and from 01.01.2021 all operations were united under the name Compass Group Norge AS.

Acquisition of 4Service

In the fall of 2024, Compass Group took a new and important strategic step in Norway through the acquisition of 4Service AS. 4Service was a strong Norwegian player with a clear presence in both the public and private sectors, and with a clear footprint in both meal concepts, FM services and cleaning. The acquisition united two companies with shared values, a strong focus on quality, innovation and sustainability, and a strong commitment to people.

Through the merger, Compass Group Norway has further strengthened its capacity and expertise, and become an even more complete and robust partner for customers throughout the country - whether it is office buildings, industry, health, education and offshore or specialized services.
